Marine Safety Instructor Training
or
Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety
Instructor Training:

What To Bring To the Course

Be sure to bring the following :

  • Personal survival kit that fits inside a closed, pint-sized Zip-Loc bag. Page B-15 of the AMSEA Marine Safety Instructor Manual lists possible personal survival kit contents. You can put together your own, or you can buy a prepackaged one from AMSEA when you get to class. See theAMSEA Store for information about what is in that kit.
  • If you own an immersion suit, please bring it with you. If not, AMSEA will loan you one. NOTE: If you are enrolled in a customized course for an agency such as NOAA or the USCG, please ask whether or not you should bring your own suit.
  • A set of clothes to wear in the water during the pool activity. Choose clothes like those you would normally wear when you are out on the water. No need to get shoes/boots wet in the pool, however.
  • Check the weather forecast for the week of your training and bring clothing to wear during outdoor activities, appropriately warm for your training location. For courses held in Alaska, bring wool, polypropylene or other material that will keep you warm when you get wet – think layered – and a good set of raingear and waterproof boots.
  • For all course locations, you MUST have closed-toe shoes or boots to wear during the live signal flare demonstration.
  • Your copy of the AMSEA Marine Safety Instruction Manual, Beating the Odds On Northern Waters, and Lessons Learned II if they were sent to you. Some participants will receive booksl on the first morning of the class.
  • ENTHUSIASM! The class is a great opportunity to meet new people interested in fishing vessel safety, cold-water safety and survival and to share information about marine safety.
  • Alaska locations only: Payment for university credit. If you wish to take this course for credit, up to 3 postgraduate level college credits are available for $90 extra. You must complete additional requirements for credit. Registration forms will be available the first day of class.
