Recreational Boating Safety Classes in Southeast Alaska


AMSEA has had strong interest in recreational boating safety classes throughout Southeast Alaska this year. Since April, we have conducted classes aimed at the safety needs of canoe & kayak paddlers, sailors, and power boaters in the communities of Juneau, Sitka, Haines, Angoon, Hydaburg, Klawock, and Metlakatla.

Upcoming, we have a class in Sitka on October 23, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM and October 24 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This hands-on workshop will cover the following classroom topics:

  • Small Boat Handling

  • Reading Navigational Aids

  • Tides & Anchoring

  • Docking & Maneuvering

  • Introduction to Knot Tying

  • Engine Troubleshooting

  • Emergency Procedures

  • Distress Signals & MAYDAYs

  • EPIRBs, SPOT, InReach, Smart Phones

  • PFDs, Man Overboard & Prevention

  • Hypothermia & Cold-Water Survival

  • Firefighting & Flare Demonstrations

  • Boat Kits & Personal Survival Kits

  • Emergency Stays on Beach

The class will meet at NSRAA, 1308 Sawmill Creek Rd, Sitka, AK 99835. The cost for the workshop is $140 and individual instruction on your boat is available for an additional charge. Register online or call (907) 747-3287.
