Become a USCG-Approved Marine Safety Instructor!

Learn to teach marine survival skills that help keep commercial fishermen safe in at-sea emergencies.

If you have wanted to become a Marine Safety Instructor and help commercial fishermen learn the skills they need to survive emergencies at sea, your next opportunity will be in East Falmouth, Massachusetts, October 11-15, 2022. The class will be held at the Coonamessett Farm, 277 Hatchville Rd. If you are a qualifying commercial fishermen, you're in luck, as AMSEA has partial tuition and travel scholarships to help you attend.


AMSEA's Marine Safety Instructor Training (MSIT) is a U.S. Coast Guard-accepted, 5-day, intensive train-the-trainer course. This program prepares you to effectively teach cold-water survival procedures, the use of marine safety equipment, and onboard safety drills. The course is designed for those wanting to teach cold-water safety and survival in a variety of settings – for commercial fishermen, private businesses or government agencies, for recreational boaters, or in schools. The topics covered include:


  • Methods of Marine Safety Instruction

  • Emergency Procedures

  • Risk Assessment

  • Cold-Water Survival Skills

  • EPIRBs, Signal Flares, and MAYDAY Calls

  • Man Overboard Recovery

  • Firefighting

  • Abandon Ship Procedures

  • Helicopter Rescue

  • Life Rafts

  • Emergency Procedures Drills

  • In-the-Water Skills Practice Session

  • Cross Cultural Communication

  • Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)

  • Flooding Control

  • Conducting Safety Orientations

The cost for the class is $995. However, if your are a qualifying commercial fishermen, you will receive a $550 tuition scholarship and up to $500 travel reimbursement.
