Join AK On-Board: Crew Training

Are you looking to embark on a career in Alaska's commercial fishing industry? Are you eager to learn essential crew skills, prioritize marine safety, and connect with experienced skippers? If so, the AK On-Board program may be for you!

Led by Alaska Sea Grant, with a collaboration of organizations including Alaska Longline Fishermen's Association, Alaska Marine Conservation Council, and Alaska Marine Safety Education Association, AK On-Board trains new crew members or those seeking jobs on the water the skills they need. AMSEA will provide the marine safety skills, leading a 10-hour F/V Drill Conductor course. All crew training attendees will receive their USCG Drill Conductor Certification. Additional topics may vary depending on location. In the recent class in Sitka, students learned about sleep deprivation, fishermen's mental health, and ergonomics.

What is AK On-Board?

AK On-Board is a statewide project that brings together industry experts, seasoned skippers, and aspiring crew members to foster learning, mentorship, and skill-building opportunities. Whether you're a greenhorn seeking to break into the industry or a seasoned deckhand looking to enhance your expertise, AK On-Board has something to offer.

What to Expect

During the three-day workshop, participants will immerse themselves in a variety of activities designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the industry. From practical training sessions to informative lectures and engaging discussions. AK On-Board covers all aspects of crew skills and marine safety. The highlight of the program is the chance to learn directly from experienced skippers, gaining insights into their expectations from the crew.
