NIOSH Letter of Support: Help Protect Commercial Fishing Safety

Dear commercial fishing partners,

Please consider signing on to a letter in support of rehiring terminated National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) employees in the restructuring within Health and Human Services. NIOSH provides critical services for the health and safety of the commercial fishing industry--the second most hazardous occupation in the U.S.

A group of fishing partners are collecting signatures on the letter attached until Thursday, April 17th EOD. Please use this form to add your name, organization / business / FV, and City, State.

Since NIOSH’s prevention efforts began, commercial fishing fatalities have been reduced by over 80%. From a financial perspective, the return on investment on this funding annually is millions of dollars to one dollar spent. The proven reduction in fatalities, injuries, and vessel disasters from marine safety training and research saves the USCG millions annually in expensive rescue operations and saves the U.S. millions in other expenses for work related injury and death. From the perspective of our fishing communities, seeing our fishermen return home safely is priceless.

Please forward this request and letter to more commercial fishing safety partners and call your state's delegates to advocate.

  1. Call the Capitol Hill switchboard at (202) 224-3121.

  2. A switchboard operator will connect you directly with the House or Senate office you request based on your state or zip code.

  3. Share your address so you can be logged as a constituent in your state.

  4. Once connected, share your name, the request, and why commercial fishing safety is important to you/ how you are impacted.

Thank you!
